Oh my god I'm so tired and it's only Tuesday.

Let's move on, for we persevere.

1) My TBR pile totters unsafely near my desk (or rather, my main TBR pile, with a secondary TBR pile in a spare room), and it's really out of control.
2) So what do I want to read now? I want to order some random Margery Allingham non-Campion mystery from the 30s. Why am I like this. Why.
3) My five months of not buying clothes is underway -- one month successfully down! But because I have excepted scarves and shoes from my no-buy policy, have I been scoping out potential purchases to replace or fill in gaps? OF COURSE I HAVE.
4) Miss Adventure has been going to a doggie daycare once (or sometimes twice) a week for three+ years, and it is the bright spot in her week. Alas, however, it is closing, and the only alternative will be less boutique and more of a hassle to get to and from. Still, she needs her socializing.
5) And the good thing about the alternative daycare is that there is an actual proper pool, and from April to October she can swim in the afternoons. She LOVES swimming.
6) The azaleas and camellias are out, here in the subtropics, and they are brave in pinks from pale to fuchsia. I do love a bright, bright pink.

Wishing you a happy week!

Happy Monday to all!

I am kind of struggling right now, so let's post 5 Good things, or, Whatever:

1) My little Giles/Anya heart smiled at this Twitter exchange. ASH is wonderful, and so is Emma Caulfield.

2) Miss Adventure is at her regular Monday daycare day, which brings her such joy.

3) As Miley Cyrus sings, I can buy myself flowers, and I did on Saturday. They're bright and lovely, and it's nice to have them.

4) Wearing an old J.Peterman blazer with a multi-colored scarf I knit myself and a ceramic and gold bangle I got at Fortnum's 5 years ago.

5) Um... five things... I'm enjoying Shrinking on Apple TV, largely because of HARRISON FORD and Jessica Williams.

Hope you have five amazing things to start your week!

It's Monday, la la la.

Miss Adventure and I have had our morning walk in the subtropical steam. She still barks at the world, but she managed to make it around the park without lunging at any passing car. Perhaps this is the side-effect of her walk Downtown yesterday; we can only go there on weekend mornings very early, because she gets over-stimulated easily, but she actually managed two blocks on the main street without serious incident. Whee!

Am writing, am working, am trying not to stress-eat. This is going less well than I hoped.

Otherwise, I've had a frustrating summer with online clothing purchases. I bought a Victoria Beckham limited-edition repurposed T-shirt; after a week, the customer-service folk said the T-shirt was actually out of stock and refunded my money. A few weeks later, I bought a cute shirtdress from Hobbs; after a week, same thing happened. So now I'm waiting on a TRULY INSANE shoe purchase from Carel Paris; the shoes have been sitting in France, ready to be shipped, for five days now.

Perhaps I'm cursed. Who knows.

Let's look at the amazing icon of TH in the mirror, made by Misbegotten, instead. :) Hugs and a happy week!

Miss Adventure has begun the week in a v.v. barky mood.

She awoke at the usual time but commenced to barking and herding me out of bed. She spent the next forty minutes on top of the loveseat, barking at the neighbors. When we went to the park, she saw two dogs as soon as she got out of the car and began barking hysterically, which continued for the next fifteen minutes. (I tried distraction techniques, but she can and does still bark even when sat and watching me.)

I'm not sure what this signifies, but -- bark! bark!

Since I can't hear myself think, four things:

1) Knitting: two projects on the go, both of which I am slightly bored with. There is new, beautiful yarn in my F&M hamper/knitting stash which tempts me, but oh, I have to finish at least one of the ongoing projects first.

I am pouting furiously about this.

2) Reading: old romance novels, which is all my brain can take right now.

3) Enjoying Loki; the third ep switched into Doctor Who plotting, which I liked even though the main series arc kind of slowed down. It's a beautiful show to look at (even beyond TH).

4) Sending cooling thoughts to the Pacific Northwest and the West in general. UGH, summer heat.

Hugs to all, and a good week!

Before I actually go off to do a workout and then work --

Happy Monday! Let's have three positive things to start a new week:

1) Miss Adventure did not lunge at any passing cars on our walk today, (She wanted to, but for once I kept a firm hand on the leash and the appropriate deployment of "Stay." Baby steps.)

2) Episode 2 of Loki was DELIGHTFUL, with banter and surprise Latin and amazing Hiddleston hair. The cliffhanger makes me nervous, but it'll be fine. I'm just along for the ride. (We'll see if I write any fic for it.)

3) I had two great Pilates classes last week. The Thursday class in particular was somehow soothingly familiar and challenging at the same time, going through the Essentials and Intermediate moves but without pausing between exercises.

All hugs and good thoughts for your week.

Okay, wow, busy busy and kind of down but here's a five-minute list:

*Two weeks past the second vaccine! Whoooo and hoooo!

*Miss Adventure, who is unmanageable with the usual collar-and-leash situation, has now been transitioned to a nice, sturdy harness for leash walks. She is dubious about it, but we persevere.

*Lyle Lovett is doing one of his online conversations-and-a-few-songs with Sarah McLachlan tonight. I will probably listen tomorrow, since once the ticket is bought, one has the weekend to access the concert.

*As you know, Lyle Lovett is a gentleman and an artist and one of my favorites. :)

*Miss Adventure is now barking ferociously. [checks] As I suspected, a neighbor is standing in his front yard. Sigh.

*Bitterly amused at the furor over BoJo's corruption in regards to redecorating his flat rather than any of the hundred other things he's done, but, you know, Mycroft works in mysterious ways.

*Got a pair of expensive sandals in an attempt to make myself enjoy wearing sandals. So far -- nope.

*Lastly, if anyone can tell me in what episodes Zawe Ashton appears in The Handmaid's Tale, that would be helpful. :) Dystopia is NOT my thing, but I do like La Ashton.

And there we are! Happy weekend to you!

This morning when I got up at 6 (which is when the alarm goes off every day), the pre-dawn world was a soft, drizzly grey. Upon checking the weather.com app, I was told that it was dry outside.

Just finished my walk with Miss Adventure. It is still softly drizzling, grey skies over the green and flowering landscape. All of this tells me that the weather.com app lies. If I weren't so sleepy I'd be irritated.

It's not just the misty morning that's making me sleepy, I think -- it's probably a little bit the aftermath of the first Covid-19 vaccine shot, which I had on Friday afternoon. The shot itself was utterly uneventful, as I got the jab at a pleasantly efficient large-scale Health Department site, and my second shot is scheduled for four weeks from now.

Or, as I think of it, six weeks til I'm back at Pilates! \O/

Workout is very necessary, after a month or so of stress-eating. Time to buckle down so my summer clothes fit, alas.

But before I go off, here's an I&A drabble, set now, on the theme of the vaccine:

Anya has never been a good patient )

Happy week to everyone.

As usual, the pollen here in the subtropics is at Danger levels, and I am craving a break. An Anywhere but Here. A rest.

So that's not happening, obviously. And I am rather glum in general, just dragging through the days.

So, quickly, 5 Things:

*It's been a great year for azaleas; most of them bloomed at the same time, and my Small Town was awash with bright bright color. As usual, of course, they are now fading at the same time. Oh well.

*The local power company came by and cut back my front-yard cherry tree away from the power lines. However, "cut back" is a bit of a euphemism: they butchered the tree. This is why my usual tree service is coming this week to even it out. La la la.

*I forgot to say that I watched the Feb 28 Instagram Live reunion of the folks from the 2019 production of Betrayal which lives in my heart. BLESS.

*And I'm ready for Loki, even though I have three months to wait... Hope THiddleston has something on his plate for 2021, since it's rumored he'll be shooting the second season of Loki starting in January 2022. Come on, THiddleston! Find a project I want to see. :)

*Miss Adventure wishes you all a happy middle of the month.
usedtobeljs: (Anya Pensive Star by Bouncy Monkey)
After two days so hot that I had to turn on the air-conditioner, a cool front has brought us closer to normal. My windows are open to the cooler air (and pollen, oh well), and the scent of my neighbor's orangeblossoms is wafting inside.

Miss Adventure is also reclining on the sofa barking at the birds, which is less pleasant but utterly characteristic.

5 Things?

1) Looking forward to reading the new Veronica Speedwell mystery by Deanna Raybourn, which should be in my Kindle as we speak. No time to read it now, but it's here.

2) Ordered new glasses, which may arrive at some point this week. I know how much my glasses cost, and I still winced.

3) The way I socialize with In-Town Best Friend these days is a brisk nature walk, and on Sunday morning we went out to a local wildlife refuge to walk on the berms around the pools. Even at 8:30 it was far too hot, but we did our 2.5-mile hike anyway, with light wind ruffling the blue water and the tall swampgrasses, with anhingas and cranes and various ducks all around.

We didn't see any gators, but I am FINE WITH THAT.

4) Enjoyed Victoria Beckham's autumn/winter 21 show/video. The sheer dresses don't work for me, but the suits, oh my god. Alas, my eye loves the high-heeled knee boots, but yesterday I wore proper heels for the first time in a couple of months and I've lost my skill in managing them.

5) Writing on my own stuff, which means I haven't ficced at all. I keep wanting to, but I keep not having ideas, so...

Have a wonderful middle of your week!
usedtobeljs: (Anya Pensive Star by Bouncy Monkey)
Imagine the same opening I have had for the past twelve months. Same, same, same.

So here are 5 Things:

1) I am thoroughly enjoying WandaVision despite being fairly uninformed about Marvel Cinematic Universe and comics canon. I'm sure I'm missing fun fan service and allusions to other stories, but it's really working for me as is. Also, I've now got the song from the end of Episode 7 on an endless loop in my head.

2) Because Ms. Zawe Ashton is reportedly signed for Captain Marvel 2, last night I semi-watched the first Captain Marvel. THAT was a film where I needed comics canon to be able to decipher the twists and turns of plot. (To be fair, I also was knitting through a lot of it, and I tend to zone out during extended action setpieces anyway.) Really enjoyed the 1990s classic "Celebrity Skin" by Hole over the end credits, though!

3) You know, this song. Such a banger, as the kids say.

4) Miss Adventure continues naughty on the leash. We're also working on recall with a treat in the backyard. Her current mode: I say "Come. Treat," and show her the treat; she sniffs it and gallops off in prime Corgi stylee; I find her by the backdoor, waiting for me. This is not exactly the plan, but... better than it was.

5) Spent time this afternoon separating out some of the costume jewelry necklaces I never wear, to send to my goddaughters. I only ask that they not call the jewelry 'retro' in my hearing. ;)

Cheers to all, and may there be good days ahead for you.
usedtobeljs: (Alex Not Amused by Winding_Path)
I have no words for the attempted coup d'etat on...was it Wednesday? Was Trump's phone call to try to bully the Georgia Secretary of State into fabricating votes only on Sunday? Time has no meaning any more.

So, because I seriously am dizzy these days with the speed of...stuff -- let's think about more cheerful things.

1) I have the proper replacement for the back fence at last, at last! It changes my backyard in terms of perception of space, etc. Miss Adventure can now go play in the backyard but only while supervised, as she indicated she might enjoy tunneling under the fence to freedom. (Sigh.)

2) Today's tea: F&M Green Tea with Ginger. Yesterday's stress-baking: oatmeal cookies with cranberries and crystallized ginger. I sense a theme.

3) At the beginning of January, I reset my clothing budget. Also at the beginning of January: mega-sales on items which the various social media algorithms had been taunting me with for months. So anyway, thanks to Paul Smith and Ann Mashburn for your shops' sales. (The Paul Smith item arrived already and I'm in love.)

4)In related news, after "knitting" (badly) for a couple of years, I have now actually mastered the purl stitch. Wheee! Too late for my birthday scarf, but the yarn for that was so pretty that it mattered not that the stitches weren't varied.

5) Because of unchecked community spread of Covid-19 in my town, I have been persuaded to stop attending Pilates classes until vaccine or a plunge in the community cases. Making Barre and matwork a home-workout priority means that Miss Adventure gets a treat to keep her from jumping on me during the hundreds or similar. La la la.

And lastly, 6) For those who enjoyed Bridgerton Series One, the inimitable Red Scharlach has drawn Simon and Daphne. Precious!

Hugs and a good weekend to all.

Ah, such a sweet summer child I was on December 31. I knew enough not to say that I thought the new year would be better, but somewhere in the recesses of my mind, I must have thought too loudly.

What resulted:

Jan 1 -- bad news about a family member

Jan 2 -- during socially distanced visit with friend A, bad news about an acquaintance; phone call later that evening from Grad School friend with bad news about another person I know

Okay, I'm already done with that.

I do have intentions for 2021, but unlike previous years, I think I'll keep them to myself. I'm writing them down in a notebook, however, and I'll check back for myself next December.

Since January 1, I have, however, 1) reset my clothing budget and ordered a sale item from Paul Smith \O/, and 2) begun to teach Miss Adventure to shake her paw, using the prompt word "enchante". This amuses me so, so much.

I'm easily amused, it's true.

Otherwise: I have no current fandoms at the moment. (Lucifer will return this year, and Endeavour, but I do not engage in fannish pursuits with them.) I will say that I did watch most of Bridgerton and v.v. much enjoyed Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury and the raised eyebrows, voice, and general perfection of Rege-Jean Page as the Duke of Hastings. Also, how cute is Luke Thompson as Benedict? Alas, however, I don't feel particularly fannish about it, so there we are.

But never mind. Off we go into 2021! As a certain pinstripe-suited Doctor was wont to say, allons-y! And I will add virtual hugs as well. :)

Just a few bits and bobs:

1) The Big End-of-Year Push at work has eased, and once I make it to Friday, I'm off until New Year's. But it's been so hellish that I... actually didn't celebrate my birthday because I had deadlines and Stuff to Do.

2) This past weekend, however, I could feel my stress level sinking (even as my allergies made life complicated). This morning I woke up and thought casually, "Oh, I have these things to do," as opposed to "OH MY GOD I HAVE TO DO THIS AND THAT AND THE OTHER THING WHAT I FORGOT THIS TOO OMG WHAT IS JUST POPPING UP IN MY EMAIL."

3) The exception to my dropping stress level is Miss Adventure, who has been deep in the throes of adolescent Corgi rebellion. We went to obedience class yesterday, during which our instructor watched Miss Adventure be super-stubborn at multiple times before she just refused to work. "That one has the attitude of ten Corgis," our instructor said.

4) I did manage to mail off Christmas packages to my brothers, so that's good.

5) To report: I did not buy the Victoria Beckham Reebok trainers I was yearning for, because they sold out in the first few days (in my size, anyway). I am now yearning for different trainers, because I am ridiculous.

I will try to do a ficlet or two this month, but as for now... sigh.

Hugs and a good week to all.

I realize that I haven't posted in a while, so 5 Quick Things:

1) Next Friday, Dec 13 -- Lyle Lovett and Elvis Costello, in an online conversation plus songs. Many of you might remember that these two gentlemen are on my short list of Favorite Artists, and I am positively giddy with excitement.
2) I have no more money in my budget this month/hell-year, but Victoria Beckham just dropped a mini-collection with Reebok, including trainers that I am YEARNING FOR. Do I need them? No. But YEARNING.
3) Miss Adventure has been so very adolescent these past few days, and although we were supposed to go to obedience class this morning, even a 1.5-mile walk beforehand had not taken the edge off her bratty attitude. So we didn't go. Ah well.
4) Have acquired a bottle of Chapel Down classic brut sparkling wine. Am saving it for Crimbo, I think... My upcoming birthday will be celebrated with Perrier-Jouet. (Or should I shift this and drink Chapel Down for my birthday? DECISIONS.)
5) Currently drinking a cold bottle of Topo Chico sparkling water, however, so there we are.

Am contemplating, too, a short mini-fic for my upcoming birthday, but I just don't have any inspiration. Will keep contemplating.

Hugs to all, and a lovely week ahead.
usedtobeljs: (Anya Somebody by Magpie)
Theoretically this is the first of November, but this year, time is so horribly elastic that it's possibly September 62. I don't even know any more.

Miss Adventure and I just took a 1.25-mile walk in the slightly steamy morning (yesterday it was cool and dry, today it is warm and potentially rainy, tomorrow it's cooler and drier). She is now panting happily at my feet, trying to cool off. I still have another thirty minutes of workout, and then some writing, and then an afternoon of work...

But I am also tempted to make blueberry muffins, and might yet do so.

Anything good to report in this hell-year, wherein my Thanksgiving plans have been (rightly!) canceled and Christmas too appears to be canceled, wherein an unbelievably consequential election looms before us, wherein the pandemic swells...

Okay, enough of that. Five good things:
*Mark Gatiss and Adrian Scarborough reading ghost stories, live-streamed from Nottingham. SPOOKY.
*Mark Gatiss's new beard. HANDSOME.
*I bought a Betrayal mug from Redbubble user Red Scharlach. CUTE.
*Thinking about booking for a livestream of the upcoming show at the Almeida, Nine Lessons and Carols: stories for a long winter. THEATRICAL.
*Kamala Harris striding off planes. CHIC. FIERCE.

Hugs to all. If you would like a drabble or three-sentence fic, drop a suggestion in the comments. :)
usedtobeljs: (Default)
Thank God it's Friday. Sigh.

*I am beginning to feel rather hemmed in, but since the Orange Satan visited nearby recently, I am now worried about venturing out, even masked. Will suck it up tomorrow for a quick trip downtown, but otherwise...

*Also, my allergies yikes.

*But Miss Adventure and I are now taking slightly longer walks in the morning, averaging a mile. Today it was a mile and a half. Does it wear her out at all? Oh no. OH NO.

*Also, I've started watching The Wine Show Series Two (on Hulu in the US, Amazon in the UK). I tried Season One, but couldn't get into it (I like Matthew Rhys but I didn't like him as presenter somehow). Series Two has Rhys staying in NYC [edited: London; NYC for Series Three] and Matthew Goode's partner in crime is now James Purefoy. Welp. Goode and Purefoy work for me. A lot a lot a lot.

*In fact, in Ep 2 of Series Two, Messieurs Goode and Purefoy (for reasons of the show) stumble out into the French morning, draped only in bedsheets 'round their lower limbs, and I might have exclaimed aloud, "OMFG, tag your porn!"

*Okay. I DID say that aloud. Miss Adventure rolled a weary eye at me and stretched out further on the top of the loveseat.

*Here, have a look at the Series 3 trailer, with a great song to accompany the stunning visuals.

There we go -- hugs, and have a great weekend! :)

Hiya, it's a big ball of crazy in the world, is it not? All of it is exhausting, near and far.

(So. Much. Work. To. Do. And. New. Tech. To Learn.)

But I will give 6 things that are working relatively okay:

*I am loving my Barre Plus Pilates classes. Tuesday we did a series of arabesques and I almost felt graceful for a minute. (False alarm. I am v. bad with balance.)

*Miss Adventure has now settled into the morning walks I'd grown accustomed to with Master Danger. And once it's not as hot as the surface of the sun, we'll take LONG walks.

*Ice-water in the late afternoons. Also, because my work schedule has changed, three days a week I don't eat lunch until after 1, and that's completely stopped my late afternoon snacking. \O/

*I am polishing my boots in readiness for "fall." And I'm wearing my ankle boots now, even though it's hotter than the surface of the sun.

*Almost finished a knitting project that's taken forever, so I can move to something more fun.

*New Lucifer! And soon I will have time to watch it! Maybe.

Hugs to all and a lovely slide into the weekend.
usedtobeljs: (Anya we persevere thoughtful)
So anyway I am already/still tired, my Sunday included five hours of work, and my planner looks like it just exploded with Work Etc stuff to do.

What I would prefer doing: playing around with my original fiction.

But preferences don't matter in 2020, so here we are.

Miss Adventure and I have just done our morning walk around the park. Once the morning temperature and humidity return to livable levels (by which I mean, early October if we're lucky), we'll walk longer. But today she enjoyed a v. full park and our venture off into the neighborhood as well; while her pulling at the leash is not Allowed, otherwise she is so much better on leash and with noise than she was two months ago. \O/

Five things I'm grateful for today:
1) I bought brightly colored Hunter wellies two years ago, and they are perfect for taking Miss A to obedience class in a damp, sandy field.
2) My morning Diet Coke.
3) Miss Adventure just stretching in the cutest manner.
4) Ginger snaps in my pantry.
5) Kamala Harris.

May you have a list of awesome things to celebrate today, even though it's 2020!
usedtobeljs: (Giles Anya Bit Busy by Head Rush)
Yesterday was a day in which Miss Adventure caught a lizard, brought the lizard into the house for killing, and then peed on the kitchen floor in celebration.

So, you know, 2020.

This week I also found out that a key work-piece I need right away had not been ordered, although I'd placed the order four months ago.

So, you know, 2020.

Otherwise, though, I am reasonably well, apart from anxiety & allergies & the occasional raging insomnia, and thus I shouldn't grumble.

Three (mostly) cheery-making things:

1) Yesterday I took Miss Adventure for a brief walk around the park, where I had a lovely chat with a neighbor and a regular walker who'd always seen me with the Dangerous Dog went past me, did a double-take, and then said, "You have a new dog!"

2) Doing laundry today and ironing later, so that all my clothes are ready to be worn on a whim. :)

3) Hurricane Isaias didn't hit the subtropics, but I send hugs for those whom it affected.

Cheers and hugs to all, in fact.
usedtobeljs: ("Dame" Emma C by Bouncy Monkey)
So, anyway, here we are. My December London trip is basically canceled, and my fall schedule is already bizarre, and it's still bloody summer and will be for two months, and the US of A is in crisis, so....

Let's talk about clothes. Also, shoes. :)

I managed to make seven weeks without real clothes or shoes purchases, which for me is truly impressive. (My annual budget was part of that restraint: I wanted to save something for fall/winter. I'm v much hoping Carel Paris comes out with a Kina model --low heeled, multi-strapped Mary Janes, chic as you like -- in brown or burgundy, but even if they do, they're spendy.) I also am thinking about work-from-home Zoom-friendly attire as well, since online meetings will be instituted as a big part of work duties.

So I've gone through my closet asking what one or two items I could use to freshen my wardrobe. (I, um, have a lot of properly curated clothes. I mean, a lot.) I will be haunting ThredUp for a new black or navy jacket, but it has to be perfect and it's not necessary right now. Thus, I realize that my only opening is for a pink shirt.

(Note: I like tailored, constructed clothes.)

Have I bought the perfect pinky-lavender oversized shirt to wear with narrow trousers or pencil skirts and low heels or trainers? Why, yes. Yes, I have. Thanks, Ann Mashburn.

I also have bought new workout shoes, thanks to accidentally stepping in dog-poop in the dark on Wednesday night, but these are less exciting. Thanks, Miss Adventure. ;)

Three-sentence fic on the subject of clothes:

Lord Peter/Harriet, set post-canon )

Happy weekend to all.
