Waving, Post #21

I just realized it's been a couple of weeks since I've posted. This is not a Dreamwidth thing; I've also been mostly silent in my other social-media haunts. Just a little down for no reason.

Three things:

1) After several months of struggle, I decided to abandon the most recent Cormoran Strike novel by J.K. Rowling. I'd felt unhappy about reading it anyway, what with the JKR social-media stances and all, but I'd invested money in the hardback and time following Strike and Robin, so... It sat on my nightstand for months, my having gotten 70 pages into the 900-page behemoth and stalled.

Early this week, then, I sat down, read another 100 pages... hesitated, and read the ending so I knew where she'd left Strike and Robin... and got up and put the mostly unread book in my sack to go to the used-book store. It was oddly freeing.

2) I just bought the most AMAZING black blazer from ThredUp. Now I just need to get through the endless summer hell of the subtropics, and yay I will wear it.

3) Christian Kane shared this link on his Instagram. Read his comment on the image. HEEEE.

I'm not sure I could get through a 900 page novel, ever. I admire your perseverance in making it as far as you did.

I've read novels as long, but this one needed a good edit -- even beyond the problematic JKR of it all.

900 pages is far too long. I've only read the first two Cormoran Strike novels and both of those could have done to lose at least 100 pages. Editing seems to have gone out of fashion.

The 900 pages desperately needed cutting -- so many subplots. So many. Even beyond my unease about JKR, I was just not enjoying the book at all.
