The first episode of Loki dropped on Disney + on Wednesday, as many people who frequent the internet could not escape. I have been looking forward to this so much, and I watched the first episode early on Wednesday morning.

Short response: loved it.

Disclaimers: Although a fan of THiddleston, as you likely know, I'm not a person who knows the MCU well. The action-focused ensemble movies don't do enough with character for my taste -- I always like the dialogue scenes better than the Kick-Punch-Kapow sequences -- and the only way I got through Infinity War was online so I could fast-forward the battles. Still haven't seen Endgame although I know the storyline. Also, the only Thor movie I've watched more than once is Ragnarok, because it is delightful and there's Loki redemption. \O/

Of the two previous MCU/Disney TV shows, I LOVED WandaVision. I tapped out of The Falcon and Winter Soldier after the first ep, and then watched the last two for completion sake (and to see Bucky flirting with Sarah). So that tells you where I'm coming from.

The mis-en-scene of most of the first episode -- low-lit Brutalist sets of this bureaucratic underworld of the TVA (Time Variance Authority)-- was amazingly done. (The fact that the London screening "premiere" was held at the Tate Modern tells you the vibe. LOVE.) The world is well imagined, the premise of Loki-the-variant being trapped in this Wolfram-and-Hart-like hierarchy is perfect, and I love the Doctor Who jam of time travel and genre mashup. Loved the new characters, especially Owen Wilson's Agent Mobius and Gugu Mbatha-Raw's somewhat sinister Judge Renslayer.

But the lure of the series for me is seeing Tom Hiddleston lead a show, and damn, the man acted his heart out. He seriously has All the Range. Cannot wait to see where he takes the character next.

I watched it again Wednesday night, full of joy, and then went to National Theatre at Home to re-watch the newly uploaded Bridge Theatre production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, the one where Oberon and Titania's roles are reversed for the scenes with Bottom.** Made it to the big, flashy dance sequence to Beyonce's "Love on Top" and just... it really was all joy in tiring, hot times.

**If you're interested, you can rent any NT at Home production without having to subscribe.

In conclusion: stylist Holly Eva White's photo of THiddleston preparing for his Jimmy Kimmel promo stuff. GOOD GOD. GOOD GOD.

Hugs to all!

So pleased you loved Loki. I’m not a big MCU fan either but I do want to see that, though I’m not sure how I’ll be able to.

I love that version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream immoderately. We went to see it twice at the theatre and have watched it again on NFT at Home.

Many hugs back :)
