Let us stipulate, to begin, that I am ridiculous and I find an inordinate amount of pleasure in clothes.

Let us further stipulate that I don't need any more clothes in the strictest sense of the term, I avoid fast fashion at all times, and I indeed am working on a winnowing of ye olde wardrobe. I have just started reading Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas, which shines a painfully bright runway light on the environmental and economic abuses perpetuated by the fashion industry; I know much of what she writes about, but it's useful to have it all in one place.

Let us finally stipulate that I do inventory as each season changes, which I did yesterday -- and which reminded me that I had enough of one particular item/color which I hadn't remembered, whee.

But I really want a brown jacket.

I have two caramel-brown jackets: both are very old (20 years old?! can that be? Er, yes, at least), both are long jackets in the menswear style (on trend again!), and both are very well-made. But the hitch lies in the length. The proportion works a treat with half of my wardrobe, but not with multiple other items. Not quite cropped, interestingly cut, not leather (because I live in the subtropics), dark brown for preference but caramel or cognac will do: this was the missing wardrobe link.

So for the past two weeks I have searched, through all of my favorite online shops, high-end and basics and all in between. I had found close-but-not-perfect at a couple of places, but I didn't feel the lift in my heart that I do when the item Works For Me. I was becoming resigned to disappointment (and to thinking I would look in Peter Jones when I am in London in December).

But then! Yesterday I was clearing out catalogues I had looked at -- or I thought I had looked at -- and had reached the last one, from Pure Collection (British brand with a US presence). As I was getting ready to toss it, the pages fluttered open to a page I hadn't seen before.

A jacket in cognac velvet, the color of which teams beautifully with blue or black. Jean-jacket-type silhouette. Well cut. Good price point.

I have a strict rule that all clothes purchases online have an Overnight clause: I must sleep on the purchase and be sure before I buy. (This is why I don't have a Gillian Anderson for Winser London jumper: I wanted it SO BADLY but in the cold light of morning couldn't justify it.) This morning I looked online, and the jacket was on sale and in stock in my size.

And, now, since it is still September, I can start my clothes-fast in October with a smug inner smile. :)
